Sentence of Ukrainian journalist Tsygipa left unchanged
On 27 March, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation considered the cassation appeal against the sentence of the Crimean ‘Supreme Court’ against the journalist from Novaya Kakhovka Sergey Tsygipa. As a result of the consideration, the cassation appeal was left without satisfaction, and the verdict – without changes. At the same time, it should be noted that despite the consideration of the case in closed mode, the judges observed the standards of access to fair justice in terms of ensuring the publicity of the proceedings – the announcement of the judgement was held with the participation of listeners, which had not been observed in Tsygipa’s case before.
The journalist and head of the public organisation ‘Kakhovka bridgehead’ Serhiy Tsygipa was kidnapped on 12 March 2022 and kept in Crimea for a long time without charges and in complete isolation. On 13 July 2023, the criminal case on charges of espionage was transferred to the Supreme Court of Crimea, which considered the case in closed mode during six sessions and passed a sentence. Sergey Tsygipa was found guilty of ‘passing to the representatives of the SBU and the AFU data on the locations, number and routes of movement of Russian military units in the special operation zone and the types of military equipment and weapons used by them’. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
