“Court” in temporarily occupied Crimea hands down unprecedented treason sentence
The Supreme Court of Crimea has concluded its consideration of a criminal case against a 59-year-old resident of Dzhankoy who was accused of treason. He was charged with being a recruited employee of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and passing on coordinates of military warehouses. The court found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment in a strict-regime colony.
According to representatives of the Crimean Process, this sentence is unprecedented among high treason cases previously tried in Crimea.
The trial and sentencing were held behind closed doors, raising questions about the equality of the parties during proceedings. Also noteworthy is that the sentence was handed down by Judge Alla Khinevich, who in 2023 was found guilty of treason by the Solomensky District Court of Kyiv and sentenced to 14 years in prison with property confiscation. The judge’s impartiality in this case therefore appears questionable.
