Halyna Dovhopola
Halyna Dovhopola is a resident of Sevastopol, a native of Bakhchisarai, who became one of the first women convicted by the occupation authorities on politically motivated charges of “treason.”
In 2019, after a search of her home, Russian security forces accused the 66-year-old woman of collaborating with Ukrainian intelligence and sentenced her to 12 years in prison. The case was classified, court hearings were held behind closed doors, and human rights activists recorded numerous violations of her rights.
Before the occupation of Crimea, Halyna was engaged in seasonal rental housing, and her daughter owned a newsstand with Ukrainian press. Due to threats from the Russians, the daughter and her child were forced to leave the peninsula, while Halyna remained in her home.
